Not so much a retro bike as the evolution of a classic, the Bullet 500 B5 is styled in the image of its 1955 namesake, with valenced steel mudguards, hand-painted gold coach-lines on the petrol tank and side panels, and winged Royal Enfield badges. This model has been in continuous production since 1955 could easily be mistaken for a restored original.

However, with some very welcome modern features, it offers 21st century riders classic motorcycling without the hassle! Electric starting, 12-volt electrics, with indicators and halogen headlights, and a slick 5-speed gearbox, make life much easier on today’s roads.

Like its 500cc predecessor, it is powered by an air-cooled single cylinder engine with a bore and stroke of 84 mm x 90 mm. However, the engine is Royal Enfield’s new unit construction design, introduced in 2009, with 5-speed gearbox and wet multiplate clutch, for fuss-free gear changes. The traditional chrome silencer contains a catalytic converter, so the Bullet 500 meets tough Euro 3 emissions regulations too, and delivers frugal fuel consumption of 80 mpg. You can travel a long way between fuel stops.

Brakes and suspension have been updated; the 280 mm front disc brake provides reliable stopping power and gas filled rear shock absorbers give a smoother ride.
