'Soft' motorcycle luggage is notorious for being difficult to secure and for scuffing paintwork, while 'hard' luggage is bulky and expensive, compared to the 'soft' variety, considering its relatively limited capacity. Both can make touring on a bike cramped and both can affect handling.

Motorcycle luggage trailers have been popular in Europe and the USA, particularly amongst riders of powerful large capacity bikes, such as Harley Davidson & the Honda Gold Wing. A well-engineered modern motorcycle trailer will not affect handling or significantly affect performance yet the volume of luggage they can transport is massive compared to bike-mounted luggage - between 283 - 595 litres!
